One of CPH’s major initiatives is to address social determinant of health needs, including food education and insecurity. Through a dedicated Local Food Systems Coordinator position, CPH has made great advancements through a variety of initiatives:
- Expanding nutrition education
- Creating community gardens
- Promoting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds at the Downtown Johnstown Farmers Market
- Exploring grants and best practice opportunities
- Launching college food pantries
3 Key Goals
SNAP Outreach
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) allows people who qualify to buy food in most grocery and convenience stores. Participating farmers markets allow for SNAP
How can CPH help?
- Outreach – setting up a time to visit your location to help people sign up for SNAP benefits
- Education – visiting your organization to talk to your team about changes in SNAP guidelines and learn how they can help people sign up for benefits and find food pantries
Community Gardens
Gardening is beneficial for mental health and is a great way to teach children about healthy foods because they eat what they grow. Gardens also help to supplement the household diet with fresh vegetables, which also helps save money to purchase other foods.
How can CPH help?
- Johnstown Grows – community garden cooperative of 10 Johnstown gardens. The group combines funds for repairs and improvements and serves as an educational resource for garden managers.
- Starting a community garden in your neighborhood or within your organization
Nutrition Education
Learning how to eat healthy and enjoy those foods with simple ingredients is important to overall health.
Good food doesn’t need to be expensive or difficult to prepare!
How can CPH help?
- Cooking and food education at your organization
- Connecting you to other food-specific organizations, including cooking classes and education
